Waitangi Tribunal

When the Ministry of Justice wanted to build a new standalone website for the Waitangi Tribunal to replace the legacy subsite they came to Signify.

Tasked with bringing their vision to life we built the refreshed site for the Waitangi Tribunal using a design sourced from Alphero in partnership with Tātou.

Some key enhancements introduced in the refreshed website include:

  • A complete retheme implementing the new design which is strongly influenced by concepts of mana tangata and kaitiakitanga.

  • Latest Silverstripe CMS version (5.2.x)

  • Sitewide search using Solr 9.

  • Support for both te reo Māori and English content, and the ability to search and toggle between languages.

  • Integration and replacement of the pre-existing Inquiry document and report search functionality.

  • Extensive page and content options (Elemental blocks) to improve visual engagement, usability, and general aesthetics.

When the site launched in September, this was the culmination of over a year of collaboration and support that we look forward to continuing to evolve in service of the Tribunal and its users over years to come.

A whakataukī offered by our User Experience Specialist - Lani Raukawa Field to the site's principal Content Author and Chief Historian prior to the launch -  "Poipoia te kākano kia puawai" – “Nurture the seed and it will bloom”
